Lots of changes and same problems hahah

Post by BKB »

I have had this SC powered mustang since the late 90s. It was never close to driving a factory car but I enjoyed it for many years. I pulled the driveline to correct everything I knew was wrong and to check on the health of the motor.

The cam is a regrind and I struggled to degree it last time. I have no idea where it was installed but the cam was ground 14' retarded if installed straight up. I had to skip teeth to get it the best I could at 2' retarded. My vacuum went down at idle but power went way up in boost, seat of the pants.

I found the cam gear worn to knife blades with 60k miles on it. Pulled the original one from the 3.8 NA engine that had maybe 30k miles on it. I did pull the SC oil pump off and used the 3.8 NA pump to reduce the wear on this gear. I only run 5-30 mobil 1, engine RPM is always low and the cam sensor bushing is in great shape with only 60k miles. Still confused why this happened but I did machine some off the back of the hub to get the gear alignment better. Have to wait and see if this is resolved. Oil pressure is still more then enough with the smaller gears. Put new rod and main bearings in it since the metal from that gear did some damage.

Biggest difference was the welding and port work I did to the lower intake manifold. tried to equal out the air flow the best I could using the m90 a high torque drill and a velocity meter. Will have to wait and see if it was worth it.

BHJ dampener I found out the mark needed to sync the cam was not on it. Sat an original balancer on top of the BHJ and used key stock to lock them into place and added the mark. Maybe mine was an early on I have no idea. Not that it changed anything, car still only likes injector timing to be 380.

So tuning is back in effect and man am I rusty. In general I had to pull fuel from the whole MAF and add more air. My main list of issues

Idle - Idle is very delicate and has been for well over a decade. Dashpot has to be painfully slow and fuel must be stupidly lean to try and get this thing to come to a idle without crashing. Turn the light on or cooling fan turns on and it just gets worse.

Start flair - tried removing all rpm adders and it will still start shoot up to 2k then crash into a stall. less dramatic warmer it is but still you have to blip the throttle to save it.

Hey man, it's been a long time, good to have you back. I'd recognize them purple pipes anywhere. I actually still have your cam doctor card from back in 2011.

There's been some pretty significant changes in tuning over the past few years. Back around 2014 BE forced an update and those guys didn't want me using their software so they disabled my dongle. I was then forced to use TunerPro exclusively. That's the best thing that ever happened as tuning eec's these days is leaps and bounds what it used to be, nothing else comes remotely close to tunerpro these days.

Yeah for attaching logs you need to zip them if they are csv's as it reduces the file size significantly. Datalogging with BE though is very limited and tedious to go through the logs. Datalogging isn't anything what it used to be years ago. We are pretty spoiled with the direct automatic logging and histogram populating I have in tunerpro. It literally takes a dummy off the street and makes them a tuner pro by literally clicking buttons.

I've done some in depth work on CZAW0 but never had a need to publish any support for it. If this is something you want to proceed with LMK and I can start putting something together.

As for the BEB file there's no way we can open it. If you go to the homepage in the getting started write up there's details on how to download the actual bin from the quarterhorse using tunerpro. Go ahead and post it and I'll give it a check over.

Are you running split port heads or the SC stamped heads?

Still single port heads, god its been a long time playing with this car. To be honest, No I don't want to learn new tuning software but if I must I must. I want to get the car to the dyno and get a starting point. Then I have a MP blower case to put on and make a new inlet plenum. After that I will probably pay for your tuning services. Lets see if I even pulled the tune off correctly.

no thats all garbled

make sure you erase the qh first and then write the tune to the correct position as detailed in the write up

use fbgi0 and read the full range, post that 256k file and i'll yank it out of there

Got it from the first bank, interestingly there's an FBGI0 tag in there, how'd you manage that?

fill out a vehicle info sheet so i know what all you've got going on.

All good, here's your startup tune file as well as a near blank xdf and CZAW0 adx. Logging is already enabled. Load these in and post back a step 1 log.

http://www.efidynotuning.com/step1.htm

Shoot the vehicle info over when you can but this should at least get you fired off and idling / running well enough to get data.
