Hi! Im looking for an input of a real engine builder, I have a COYOTE engine block im rebuilding to stock nothing performance besides bearings and rings. Sent the block to a machine shop to have the deck inspected for flatness and prepare the cylinders for new rings of course also crankshaft to be polished (no wear on it).
They told me the deck is good and don't need anything but light cleaning (I'll do it with a fine sand grip). But upon checking it at home I see a small chip that I can fell with my nail, my guess it won't be a problem, yet I wanted to share to see a second opinion.
You got it back from the machine shop looking like that?
Cross hatching on cylinder kinda doesn't look right.
That liner looks bad, but I've never seen the inside of a coyote.

Yes they did that crosshatch. NOTE: There was no need to resurface the deck, those stains are from running with water only I guess, they disappear with very fine sand grip paper.
My guess is I could get with it using JB Weld, I highly doubt this engine will see boost anytime soon and also the engine is mine, if I charge someone I wouldn't allow anyplace to failure, however its mine and the available Machine shops here aren't that great, charge a lot and delay some days too.
I'll try the epoxy method to see how it holds up, unless someone is VERY clear that, that won't work.
It's a direct path to blow compression into the water jacket. Is it a scratch or crack? If that's a crack it's game over.
I would suck it up and have it decked and be sure it's not cracked. Or find a running engine.
