98 ECU in 96 Vehicle

We have a 96 Cobra with the 2 bank ecu that has minimal OBD2 flash support and datalogging is erratic at best even with QH. Stock bottom end and B heads. This car is not going to have crazy mods and will remain mostly as Ford built it. EGR/Secondary air injection is gone, IMRC is on and bench tested ok.
The only option I have found that appears to reliably support the 2 bank ecu is SCT PRP and X2/3/4.
With all that in mind, we were considering tracking down an 8 cyl 4.6 ECU from 1998 as they are 4 bank and still have the same ignition setup as the 96 car. We would start with a 98 Cobra bin. Support for flash and logging looks to be much better for this type of ECU.
We did not think a 99-04 ecu would work since COP was implemented.
Any thoughts on feasibility of that plan are appreciated.
Thanks.
Phil
