AODE Jmod compatibility and basic upgrades

Unread post by Luis5.oh »

Hello! The 4R70W (EEC V Explorer with 95 TCC solenoid) I swapped to my 95 Mustang GT is dying as it struggles more and more to shift to overdrive most of the time.
I figured I should swap back again my original known good AODE, but before I do it, I wonder if I can do the JMOD to it and/or swap the valve body from my current 4R70W.
So what are the common mods for a AODE? I don't remember where I saw that people put 4r70w valve body on them.

Or maybe my transmission fails to go in OD because of a bad solenoid? Because whenever it does shift to 4th it accelerates and work just fine.
Also the shifter lever and torque converter seal started to leak.

What would you do? Im not wanting to spend big money right now.

is it throwing a code for a failed shift?

I definitely wouldnt recommend swapping a faulty trans component to a known good one especially something as vital as the valve body.

If you do the j mod then theres no benefit in swapping the vb

if the tcc and shift lever is leaking thats prob why od isnt kicking in when it should

you have to yank the trans to replace the tc, might as well toss the known good aode back in there when you do

first id check the fluid level. if solenoid 1(a) is going bad it could/would sometimes downshift from 2-1 at slow speeds or start off in 2nd at times it shouldnt.

u sure its not the tcc slipping making it feel like its in 3rd?

No codes flashing (I'll check it if has something stored), It operates smooth overall, 1, 2 and 3 are excellent but when it takes turn to jump into OD, rpms go up like it if was in neutral, if I give it some gas at that point it doesn't affect anything, so I just press the OD button in the shifter and it goes back instantly and perfectly fine to 3rd again.
BUT, if it is in the mood sometimes with a little effort it shifts into 4th gear, and once there, there is no slipping and feels strong, I think this is enough to confirm clutches stuff are okay.

my first knee jerk reaction is that it could be the accumulator acting up, could be the sleeve worn or the spring. I would pull the pan and toss a shift kit/accumulator upgrade in it. Do the fluid fix the leaks and even drill the vb holes for the j mod all at the same time. Might not fix it if its the od band slipping but thats what id do.

Im not a trans expert so I could be way off but for its worth thats my .02

Isn't the Shift timing different between AODE and 4R70W

No, the AODE/4R70W is one in the same. Minor differences but most notably is gear ratio.

Trans are at their core one in the same.
