Stock ECU Clone?

I'd like to start off by saying I am a complete novice at all this as I've just begun to dive into learning to tune and digesting all the information out there.

With that said is it possible to clone an ECU using hardware from Moates and Tuner Pro RT or similar equipment without going through a dealer?

When I say clone I mean clone everything. PATS, VIN, tune, all of it. As I understand it so far the box codes would have to match and I don't for see a problem finding one.

Also I've done some reading on the Moates site and I am a little confused on exactly what gear I need. Can someone provide me with a quick list of what I need to buy?

Mostly yes. Hardware must match or be close, box code does not.
Hardware examples: SMD-218A, MLC-221, ML2-371, ECT....

J3 = easy, DBW is custom Mike stuff..

I'd follow the Getting Started article for Modules/J3 Adapters

TPRT is hands down the best solution, however making sure the XDF is available is Mike's category. Premium Member would be my recommendation.

Just read the tune off the original ecu using a moates quarterhorse and write it to a moates f3 chip.

To make it a 100% clone you will have to jumper off both of the jumper terminals on the moates chip but its no big deal though.

The other better option would be to read it and write it to another ecu using an obd2 cable. Details are on the homepage.

One thing I forgot to mention was that I'd like to do this with the ECU out of the car. What confuses me the most is what hardware to use and buy?

9 times out of 10, the Burn2 can do it without powering the ECU.

I purchased the following for working with EEC-IV and EEC-V:
1 x 'QuarterHorse' for Fords
1 x FA Ford Module Programming Adapter
1 x 'F3v2' Ford Memory Adapter
1 x FE Ford EEC Computer Reading Interface
1 x 'BURN2 Chip Programmer'

I can now read any EEC on the bench without powering the device.
I can tune using the Quarter Horse.
After tune is finished burn it to the F3 chip, and swap out the Quarter Horse.

Fun stuff!!

So even though Burn2 is a chip programmer I still need it to read stock ECUs?

BURN2 will read the EEC-IV and V and burn the F3V2 and SCT 6600 CHIPS; and depending on USB power, will determine if you need to power up EEC-V boxes. EEC-IV has never needed bench power for me. The FA/FE are the adapters that connect to the BURN2 for Ford J3 stuff.

QH will read the box and can data log stuff. Not recommended to leave on the EEC.

F3V2 is the rock solid reliable device to attach to the J3 card edge for final tunes.

Other options are on Moates site too. You can also grab a Module as listed in the Getting Started page pertaining to your ECU from that Oleg dude.

What I did, was start with bare minimum, I bought the Quarter Horse only, it will do what you need.
As stated above, not recommended to keep on EEC.
If you on the bench, just wire up the power, make a wire harness for the bench. Verify power and ground pins before switching power.

With just the Quarter Horse, you can read and modify the bin, datalog, etc...

When your ready to do final tune, get the Burn2 and F3 chip for writing.

I have only used Quarter Horse, so that is all I know for reading from EEC. You'll have to research for yourself on the different modules to read, to see if it suites what you want to accomplish.

I suppose if your just wanting to read the bin, and not put a chip in a running vehicle, you could get away with just the Burn2 and J3 adapter.

Why specifically are you guys saying it’s not good to leave the QH on the ecu? I’ve wondered about this and know if the memory battery dies it could cause an issue without a laptop but is there another reason?

I feel like I’ll never get to not wanting to data log once in a while and keep learning but also don’t want to cause myself any issues either.
