Tunerpro Error while Running. EMI?

Unread post by RinerAuto »

I'm having an issue where Tunerpro RT will start getting connection errors shortly after starting the engine. When this happens the dashboard freezes and datalog data is all flat lines.

A short description of the car/setup: it's a 94 Mustang with EECV, modified stock harnesses, and coil near plug. Since it only occurs after the engine is running I am thinking EMI noise.

Thinks I have done or checked:
  • Used stock harnesses in attempt to keep stock powers and grounds
  • Coil powers used from a stock 4.6L harness, so it has the ignition capacitor connected to ground
  • Tried every USB cable I own, with and without ferrite bead and different lengths. I have ordered a high quality one to try next
  • Tested with coil power directly connected to battery ie not through harness or on ECU powers
  • Tested with extra ground from engine to chassis
  • Tested with alternator disabled
  • Confirmed EECV grounds and case ground
  • Cam sync and crank position wiring is twisted pair with shielding connected to ground at ECU end
  • Latest FTDI driver
  • Tried multiple driver latency values
  • Tried several different ADX files, but all released ones from Decipha
  • Verified Tunerpro settings match "Getting Started" writeup
  • Car is mainly a racecar so a lot of wiring and components have been removed (HVAC, radio, air bags, etc)
Anything that I am missing or other things to try/check? Are there known troublesome input pins? I'm at the point of trying to wrap the USB cable or the ECU in tin foil to help shield.

Moates used to make an opto isolator for the QH, to work around EMI issues.

Well aluminum foil didn't help. Sometimes it errors out immediately after startup sometimes it's like 30 seconds. Tried to see if related to switch from OL to CL, but that doesn't seem to correlate.

Moates isn't around anymore. If I can find and fix the EMI issue then don't need some other component.

Change out the battery in the QuarterHorse.
Use an extension cord to power your laptop.
Don't use the car power thru an inverter to power laptop.
Try a different laptop.

Moates are gone but EMI has not. They produced the optoisolator to overcome difficult environments. They also produced a bluetooth module which achieved the same result. The Moates Bluetooth was just a generic HC05 dongle.

I 2nd the concerns about laptop power source.

Opto/Galvanically Isolated USB cable and dongles are also available. The isolation wants to be as near the QH as possible.

On my setup I routed the usb cable nicely under the glove box zip tied to the metal under dash. That caused an issue for my setup. So I went back to it laying on the floormat. My point is try changing the route of the usb cable if you have not already.

Laptop is running on battery. Familiar with ground loops.

USB cable is just sitting on floorboard at the moment.

I'm going to use a portable AM radio today to try to narrow down noise source. Also going to try a ferrite bead at both ends of the USB cable. The USB bluetooth option is interesting, I'll look into that.

Quarterhorse was replaced with new last year. However this is its first use. The QH battery voltage reads good though.

Won't say it's completely fixed but I am able to datalog for longer than 30 seconds now. So I'll call that a win!

I added a second ignition capacitor to the passenger side coils wire. I had the one on the drivers side already. I noticed in the wiring diagrams Marauder's called out one on each side. Dug through my collection of wiring harnesses and found another one to add to my harness on the passenger side. Interestingly the F150 harness that I had also had two capacitors.

Can you post a picture of what you are referring to? I think my harness only has 1
