Mechanical advice 4.6 2v

Unread postby redtopracer » Thu May 21, 2020 10:01 am

Sooooo.......

I know this isn't the place to ask however as far as forums go I can't think of a larger knowledge base to ask.

Having issues with a 4.6 2v NPI engine making a nasty valvetrain noise at startup on the passenger bank. Only does it when started and the colder it is the longer and noisy it is. It goes away with temp or when you put it under load.

At first figured it was lifters, so replaced them.

Nope lol.

Timing chain looked good. But tensioners looked like crap.

So I threw some PI cams and a new timing set on it.

No dice.

Next week im dropping the oil pan to clear the oil sump when I do some long tubes.

I know it's just a cheap mod motor. But rn I really need this thing to perservere lol.

Can anyone give me any advice on this?

Thanks in advance.

I do.

Checked the passenger bank cam cap that meters out oil.
Big ole hunk of sludge completely blocking the orifice.

Aaaaannnnnnd the cam caps kind of show it too. Couple scratches on them that fail the finger nail test.

Cleared the noise up, but now the damn driver's side head makes a rattle on shut down.

Are there any other screen or restrictors I could check out that you know of?

no

sludge is no good. I would run it with half oil and half trans fluid til it got up to operating temperature ~15 min. Drain it and replace the oil and filter.

Could help with any sludge left over in there. Hopefully nothing important got gunked up too bad.

i did that when i first had the issue.

It ran better with the ATF in it lol.

But started making the noise right up again after draining and replacing the oil.

after clearing the deposit on the passenger bank mechanically it hasnt made a peep since from that bank. Think the damage was already done though. Cam cap looked like ASS. If I could get drivers side to stop making noise on shut down id drive around town a little easier lol

Engine doesnt like cold starts. Cranks right up when warm, but takes a few extra cranks when cold and it sputters into life.

Fires right up when warm though.

Thinking of pulling all the cam caps when i drop the pan and blowing compressed air through the filter fitting to try and force crud out of it.

if the damage is done then its too late

cam journals arent replaceable youll have to replace the head. I recall within the past couple years there was a company making sleeved bearings though for the 4V crowd. Doubt youd be troubled with that on an npi head though.

cant hurt blowing her out

lucas makes some engine quieting lube additive. Youd be surprised what it can do.
