5.0 HCI Tuning

Been messing around with the mostly stock A9L tune for my engine for a while, just getting my head around TPRT and tuning in general.

Decided recently that it was about time we go ahead and smooth everything up, starting with the A9L2 tune and going from there. Shouldn't be a massive leap since it is a fairly basic HCI build.

After updating all the basic parameters (injector slopes, breakpoint, offset, crankPW and MAF) car started OK and idled reasonably once warm.

A few files below for reference, including the initial tune file.

I've done a few MAF checks to dial in the fuel and am hoping I'm on the right track. In the 110625_MAF_CHKs.xdl file, I did a bunch of free revving up to about IMAF 325 and then attempted to continue on the road from 350 up. The road runs might take a bit more practice to get decent values I feel. From the TP_IMAF_IEGOs History Table, it looks like I need to multiply the MAF curve as follows:

175 - 0.991
200 - 0.994
225 - 1.052
250 - 1.015
275 - 0.977
300 - 0.993
325 - 0.978
350 - 0.977
400 - 0.978
450 - 0.956
500 - 0.991

(not much data above 500)

Does that sound about right? 500 is about as far as I can go without heading past half throttle. I do have a decent long straight hill climb nearby so might give that a go.

The 110625_hotIdle.xdl files shows just that. Does this look reasonable? Looks like RPM is about 100 over DSDRPM, which I'd like to bring down at some stage.

I appreciate that cold starts are a little down the road but I've also included a log for reference - 110625_coldSt_roughToGood.xdl. This shows the engine struggling for a while then settling down quite nicely after about the 2mins40s mark in the log. Is there anything that can be done to help this out in the interim, until we get to looking closely at cold starts?

You should change the name of your tune to avoid confusion with the original. Did you do the initial setup for the injector size, etc in the tune?

Of course, thanks. I've edited the post above to add a name.

Yep, all the intial setup changes have been made, with the exception of spark. By my reckoning, the TFS170s should end up with about 5* more timing but then it is recommended to remove 4* for initial tuning. So I just left it as is. I could yank 1* if that is necessary.

Cheers

Assuming all of the above looks okay, which of the history tables is best to dial in load? I’ve done a half throttle run from low to high rpm and want to make adjustments accordingly.

My best guess is the N_TP_LOAD_GUFX table.

If that’s right, do I just multiply the load table (FN035?) by the figures in the bottom most row, which relate to the half throttle position.

@ auscob07 Thanks for sharing your files. I'm following along with your tuning efforts. For over two years, I have searched and searched for videos of people tuning their vehicle with TunerPro RT and the decipha files and unable to find anything. This is a close substitute. I'm able to follow what you are discussing and look at your xdl files too. Keep sharing and thanks to red5.0fogger too for his feedback.

Read the table of contents on the homepage if you haven't already. It's a lot to learn all in one shot for sure.

Certainly loads of info in all the write ups. I've read everything multiple times and still come up short for some strategy specific queries like this one.

Not saying I haven't missed something so happy to be pointed in the right direction.

Fn035 is perload for fuel

load is spark.

I ran your tune through the difference tool and everything looks corrupt when compared to the base tune. It looks like you adjusted too many things.
also,

Is your engine 377 CI ?
Is your injectors 45#

I think you should start over and just do the basics.

Thanks so much for having a look at the tune.

I cannot overstate how many times I read through all the write ups before posting. But still I’ve obviously made a fundamental and monumental error somewhere. Unbelievable!

I’ll have another go, making sure to follow the order for the changes and double check once done.

Again, many thanks for taking the time.
