351W with broken rod
I picked up a 1993 F150 4x4 yesterday that hydrolocked and has a broken rod. Guy said he ran it for a minute or so in that state and sounds terrible. Should I assume the block is trashed or spend the money on getting it checked out? She still holds oil pressure :)

Re: 351W with broken rod
The block probably got whacked. I wouldn't waste the time or effort. Unless the rod broke at the cap, oil pressure should be unaffected.
I used to score 94+ roller blocks complete from my local u pull it yard for $500. That's probably your best bet.

Thanks for your input man, that sounds like the way I will go. Will all of the 93 manifolds and accessories bolt right up to a 94 roller block?

Also, is running the roller setup with the SD computer a good idea?

Re: 351W with broken rod
yep its all the same
id recommend tossing a set of heads on it. any aftermarket head is a 100hp gain
yeah computer is not a concern

Re: 351W with broken rod
Cool thanks, I picked up a good used motor from a 1994 E150 for $600 + tax and $125 Core.
I like the idea of upgrading the heads but being in California I would need to keep all smog equipment. Would something like this work with air injection? https://www.summitracing.com/parts/edl-60229?rrec=true

Yup. I ordered 60399 heads in November of 2020. Were around $800 dollars then, now just over $1000 now.efloth wrote: ↑2022 Feb 24, 15:04 found this one says 50 state legal :) but costs twice as much :(

Guess what, still waiting for Edelbrock to get there A$$ in gear, apparently production run will start April 2022. I highly doubt it, and am not expecting miracles right now. I did receive one head, still waiting for the second one. I've cut my losses, will see how long it really takes to ship, and will be a pleasant surprise when it arrives. It's now turned into a bet with myself, currently I'm down, loosing, but if I win, I'll have a set of heads for my spare block.
Beware of out-of-stock and ships directly from manufacture, as production runs/shipping times have ZERO to NONE ETA...plus infinity.
I since found reconditions heads from a very good shop Sperry Engines, which shipped and received within days. Currently setting up.

Re: 351W with broken rod
I wouldnt be concerned with the heads too much as far as emissions goes. If all else is stock they arent going to dig in to it. And any aftermarket head will produce better emissions anyway.

Re: 351W with broken rod
Starting to accumulate parts for this build. Would you stick with the stock cam for a truck application? Should I re-use cam/lifters with 180k on them? They look pretty good still but I'm no expert.
I am going for a somewhat budget oriented build but interested in best bang for the buck upgrades. I am having the blocked machined and am replacing internals as needed. I ordered a reground crank/bearings so far. Was thinking about the speed pro hypereutectic pistons. Any recommendations since I am starting from the ground up?
