10R80 SBF SWAP

Unread post by rusty_lawrence »

I spent a decent bit of time reading about the 6r80 SBF swaps and some of the bellhousing kits and controllers that are out there. Good reads and videos!

USShift is working on a controller for the 10r80. They are behind, but they responded to my email that it will be out this year. I got a 94 Novi supercharged Lightning with the E4OD. If that E4od ever goes out, i would love to do 10 speed swap. Texas Speed lab has been doing them with the coyote swaps and figured out how to keep the factory shifter linkages. I'd probably just send it to them.

The 10r80 transmissions are cheap and hold power. SBF Kits are reasonable and seem to be the same as the 6r80. Controller cost should be reasonable. Probably need to shorten up the rear end ratio in my truck.

Thoughts? anyone done the 6r80 swap?

we had a few 6r80 swaps at the shop. That was when usshift first released their controller for the 6r80 and we were having a bunch of problems with them. Couple years ago they updated their firmware and all has been perfect since.

I would expect no less from the 10r

did some math... with a 4.10, 1st gear looks useless with a 10r80 and maybe even a 6r. I think a 10r would need a shorter axle gear or lockout 1st gear. RPMs stay in the sweet spot for my centri though.

Man I really like the way the 10r looks with keeping the 4.10 and 2nd gear launches!

I see the appeal of lots of gears and close ratios. That said there can be huge performance gains from finding the best torque convertor for your application. The modern gurus out there can tune the convertor to be loose to build rpm, then it tightens up as the engine reaches peak power to slingshot the car forward. I'm not saying it's a cure-all but something to consider.

The real beauty of 10 forward speeds is the RPM band can be kept really narrow under power. So with that said, with a controller you could set your shift point to, say, 7000, and after the shift, RPM might only drop to 6500. In doing this, it also allows one to tailor the engine's power curve TO the shift points, potentially giving you a real advantage. The only complaint I had out of mine was that the 2-3 shift was a little on the violent side under power. many have said the same thing. Mine was bone stock 2.3L.

USShift said the 10r controller would be out in 2021 too. Don't hold your breath. I talked to Jake about it again this am.

I just passed on a new Ford 10r that was delivered to my shop for a current build. Can't wait 1-2 or more years for a controller or for one to have the bugs worked out. Would like to drive it the days I want and not have to wait.

Done 6r swaps behind 460sbf' and the GenII works good. Other than the leadframe and OSS issues that lock up the output shaft at 60,70 or ??? and you're sliding down the road trailing smoke and driveline parts it's a good trans

hell yeah . Looking forward to using this on my built 97 cobra. PBH already has me lined up on a built 10R . debating on if i will just use the 2020 ECU on the 4v engine ... if thats even possible. hopefully USShift will be done before i am though .

U can run less rear gear with the 10R80, with the 4.69 gear. They use the 10R on 4 cyl applications too, with a 3.15 final; and they do great.
