Newbie requesting shopping list

Unread postby Wirenut8 » Tue Jan 22, 2019 11:28 am

Good Morning All,

I hope this is not an annoying repeat. I did do a search, but my limited member clearance didn't allow me to read all topics. I am new to custom EFI tuning (was a die hard carb guy). Although I have years of experience as a driveability tech at Lincoln/Mercury dealerships (1996-2003), I never ventured into more than PID reading and diagnosis. All my toys were old and carbed. Now I have a new project and I would like to stay EFI but I realize that I am way behind and want good advice before spending money. (hate buying things to fix bad decisions).

Anyway, I have a 93 Bronco with a 94 Roller 5.8 in it (E4OD). The current setup is stock bottom end (fresh), was told its a Crane cam "just over stock" with 1.7 rockers. It has the Edelbrock Truck Performer upper and lower, BBK twin 58 TB, shorty headers and cat-less exhaust. I plan to swap my AFR 185 heads with 1.6 rockers, upgrading the injectors (research leads me to think 30 lb would be ideal as I may up the performance later). I am not in a smog testing area and this will be a sand dune toy.

I have contacted both Motes and Tweecer with conflicting recommendations. The interweb makes it seem that MAF conversion is the only way, but at this performance level, a custom tune would also be needed. I don't really have the time to self teach myself how to do a tune from scratch. I would buy a tune (if there is one that would fit my setup), and try to tinker from there. If anyone has gone through all of the growing pains and can steer me to the best way to make it run strong, not lean out and/or detonate my pistons to death and not spend a million dollars ( have to fight the urge to put carb on it and C6 conversion). I would love any advice!! Thank you!!

By the way, it currently has the A2Z2 strategy in it now.

Thank you for the quick reply!! Two quick questions. With the QH, are there other parts needed for downloading or are those for advanced features? Also, the tune says "60lb. injectors" is that the recommended injectors for my setup? Again thanks!!!

I found the answer to one of my questions. Thanks EFITuning.com. I wasn't sure when I needed the Jaybird chip and attachment. Do you recommend the TunerPro RT over BE?

i dont know what u mean by downloding but u can read the stock tune which is useless and wont do u any good

once u remove the qh the tune comes out with it since the qh serves the tune to the ecu

u mean efidynotuning.com ?

i use tunerpro, its no doubt more powerful and its free

Yes, sorry about the typo. I did more reading on this website and found some of my answers. I was confused about how the strategy and tune was "loaded". I was under the impression it was a re-flash. I got it now. This works more like the tool (Canape') I use at work sometimes. Thanks!!

TunerPro vs BE is a personal choice.. I prefer BE and I know others do too.. Either work. I still cant figure out how to interpolate using TunerPro

Either program works, and they each have their own advantages.

TPRT:
- multiple tables in a single window
- strategy editor built in
- datalog dash shares the tuning window

BE
- constantly updated
- MAF fitting tool (kinda works)
- Data tracing on functions
- built in interpolation button
- user defined PIDs (for logging external data streams)

Update: Head swap done, Quarter horse purchased, Tuner Pro downloaded. Before starting the tune process, I am making sure the mechanical s are right. Couple things that have me concerned (or wondering path to take).
1.)The engine has aftermarket valve covers with PCV on the right side and open breather on left. Also has aftermarket air intake. I know its best to have this system closed to not to have a constant vacuum leak. Should I plumb a hose into the plastic intake tube (before TB) or just run two open breathers, eliminating the PCV system?
2.) The TAD and TAB solenoids are still present with nothing hooked to the output side (received it this way). Was planning on capping off the output side of the solenoids to avoid vacuum leaks (assuming this tune is still utilizing those functions). Is my assumption correct or can I remove these solenoids all together and cap off the source vacuum?

Thanks again for the help. With stock computer it runs rich at idle (assume the 30 LB injectors are the cause) idle is fast, but it sure seems snappy (free reving). Can't wait to see how it turns out.

First of all, thank you for any and all help!!!

I started looking through the BIN (from main page). I assume I need to change the injector data for 30 pounders that I have. I found the parameter for high slope and voltage offset, but I could not find the low slope, etc. I tried searching fr ALOSL too, nothing. This is with TunerPro RT. I have not put in the quarter horse yet, but plan to soon. Just thought it would be a good idea to set some things before even starting. While I am asking, should I be changing other things while I am there for a base tune?

The truck is a 93 Bronco with a 94 5.8
AFR 185 heads
Small torquer Crane Cam (Good idle vacuum)
Edlebrock upper and lower intake
BBK 58mm twin TB
Shorty headers with no Cats
3.55 gears and 33" tires

Thanks again!!

there is no low slope in that strategy

get it running first dial in the ve table and then go from there

Ok. Thanks should I keep the high slope as is or put the values that are for 30 lb injectors? I will research how to set up the. VE table.

you need to put your actual info in

you have to log the ve table corrections. so once it gets in to closed loop and at warm stable idle, in tunerpro click on the show data history tables icon and select Hist_VE from the drop down menu. Select running average and then go for a drive trying to hold it stable in each cell as long as you can. Once you've populated the table with good values. Apply each of those corrections to your fueing ve table. The other ve table is for trans shifting which isn't as important til after you get the ve table dialed in.

its that simple.

So connected with TunerPro, initialized the hardware, downloaded bin from emulator to file, uploaded bin to emulator PLO_180123a.bin (with high slope set at 30.233), enabled emulator. Turned on the key, fuel pump turned on and then off as expected, cranked and it popped off for about 2 seconds and died. Reattempted a few times but no idle. Only a few spits and then death. Mind you it would run and idle with stock ECU (QH not installed). Any ideas? Thanks!!

Tried that. Tried even dividing that amount by 1.5, tried going back to original and multiplying by 2. Didn't seem to make any difference.

Injector offset values set as:
15.94 0.438
15.00 0.438
14.00 0.531
13.00 0.625
12.00 0.719
11.00 0.875
10.00 1.063
8.00 1.656
0.00 3.250

So I try to change the values to this:
16.00 0.441
15.00 0.441
14.00 0.519
13.00 0.627
12.00 0.730
11.00 0.872
10.00 1.057
8.00 1.669
6.00 3.253
0.00 3.253
0.00 3.253
0.00 3.253

When I save and commit the changes, the window goes away and then when I bring it back up the values are the old ones before change.

thats all the resolution it has.

it wont even stay running with your foot on the throttle? you need to get the ve table closer to get it going. Might do better downloading one of the stock files and modifying it.

Loaded C3P3 with my injector values. Fired right up, idled good fast at first as it should then came down. However, maybe I am missing something, but I cant see any parameters. All the parameter dashboards and list drop downs are blank. Is there something I need to load in?

Loaded new strat and ADX files. Dashboard now shows up, but I don't get any values. I had the DA connected, tried toggling the data tracing enabled switch. No luck. I did log a file and saved it. Do you want me to attach it to this post? Thanks again!! Sorry to be a pain!!

If you mean the "search for univ" then apply patch, I did that, but now that I think about it, I did that with the old XDF file. I will apply the patch again. All the other "preferences" that were in the write up, I did do all that. Too late to fire the truck up again tonight. Will check tomorrow. Thanks again!!

I got it working. Thanks again. I am running the C3P2. I set the injector values and at first it was running pig rich. I tried dividing the VE table by two, it stalled. Set it back and tried 1.5, it was still way bad. Think I was going the wrong way. Went back to original values and multiplied the whole table by 1.5 and then the O2 started switching. Idled pretty good, throttle seemed pretty good, a little delay of initial stab. (not expecting super crisp). I am finding that I need to replace my t-stat as my ECT never got over 180. I will put the stock 192 in it and see how that works. If I could ask one more question (for now :) ) when you mentioned before to drive with the Hist VE table..., do I add that value from that table to regular VE table? I assume that is what you mean. It seems that the higher the number in the VE table, the less fueling it does per block. I assume when all is correct the Hist VE table will read zeros. Thanks again!! Funny thing is this tool seems similar to a tool I use at work (Canape'). I don't use it often but it's similar.

Quick update. I was thinking about what I wrote and know that I am wrong in my thoughts. When I first thought the truck was running pig rich (eyes stinging), my Hego was sitting at a constant .02. That would indicate a lean mixture. Could I have been indicating lean because I was so rich, misfiring was happening? I can put a log file on here if you like.

its hard to go too rich to misfire has to be off significantly

in any case, once it gets in closed loop the ve histogram is just saving the fuel error. In a perfect world with fuel perfect the ve histogram table will read 1.00 to 1.05

the ve histo table is just saving the fuel error

you have to manually apply the correction from the histogram table to the corresponding cell in your VE table

I really appreciate your help with this!! I read and reread all of your write ups. I am guilty of missing stuff, as I would see that most of it was about MAF vehicles so I was skipping ahead. Replaced the T-stat, now we are running the temps it should. Am starting with just idle fueling and low load reving (free reving). Just as a sanity check, the correction you speak of is multiplying the existing cell value by the correction factor. For example if the current VE cell is at ..828 and the Histogram is 1.020, I would change the VE table by multiplying .828 * 1.020?
Also noticed that my idle speed is hanging around 975, TPS at .94. Should I address this now or after initial fueling corrections? This is all with the C3P2 bin. (with my injector values)
