Sporadic idle hunting

Unread postby Bronston » Sun Mar 19, 2017 12:35 pm

Hi, I'm struggling to pretty much get started. I've had an idle hunting issue since I put the cam in my engine, pretty much expected, but I'm having a lot of trouble fixing it now that I have a quarter horse. The behavior seems very strange. It will idle steady around 1500 rpm for a while sometimes a solid 15 minutes, the entire time the IAC duty cycle sits at something like 3% like it's trying to bring down the idle, then the idle will suddenly drop down to 200 or lower often dies, occasionally the IAC will max out fast enough to bring the engine back up but it will then shoot up to 1500 and bounce back and forth between 200 or stall and 1500 for a while, eventually it will go back to the constant 1500. Nothing I do lowers it from 1500. I was suspecting a vacuum leak so I capped every line but map and fuel pressure regulator and hunted around the engine with propane. No change, no indication of vacuum leak.

I've been reading everything I can find for a couple/few weeks and I'm assuming I need to get into the fuel dial in but it's just not clicking, I can't seem to find basic enough information for me on fuel dial in on speed density. I'm also not clear on whether or not I need to do it, the injectors are stock 19#, stock regulator, stock fuel pump. I'll be going to 30# soon but for now all the fuel stuff is stock.

Any help would be great. Thanks.

Look at TPS and spark advance, see what they are reading.

The tps is good, reads about 1.05 shows closed in the log. I haven't had a chance to look at spark yet, I know it's pretty far off, started working on it last night, mechanically set it to 10 degrees, didn't mess with the tables much, drove to work on about 50 horsepower this morning. Gave it a nudge at lunch and was back to hitting the speed limit. I'll see what I can find out later.

Do I need to mess with fuel dial-in on all stock fuel parts? I'm having trouble getting started on that and I guess it's probably not stock for LHBL0.

the stock LHBL0 tunes are horribly configured, they require significant adjustment just to tune a stock setup correclty

i'll post a speed density write up and a base LHBL0 calibration for you to get started

Hmm 17 gallons of premium approximately 40 miles back and forth to work total in a week. Didn't expect my baby injectors to make it run rich or maybe they're running with the key off in my driveway, heh.

I meant to post a speed density write up with a tune but didn't have any free time

here load this in and dial it on in

its already scaled in half so the VE and injector size is supposed to be halved so don't be alarmed

you'll have to disable the trans controls

I was just about to load this and noticed it's gone, I already downloaded it but I'm concerned it was removed for a good reason. What's up?
Also can you give me a hint about disabling trans control and with your tune should I dial advance back to 10 degrees?

Thanks

nothing to be alarmed about i removed it just in case others come searching and falsely assume its a base tune, i gotta whip up the write up and post it no biggie, it wont be much different just the spark table revamped to be moreuniversal and in line with the other write ups

set trload and tstrat to 0 along with any trans auto related checks like tss, oss, and any of the tcc_is sl1_is xxx_is scalars etc... that you have access to

Ah ok. I loaded it in, world of difference. Thanks again! It does bog down hard now for a second when you initially hit the gas but then takes off like it ought to, I'm sure a bit of tweaking will take care of that. Still getting no where near the power I feel like I should but I don't think that has anything to do with the tune, probably should've used even lower gears and the intake is probably still choking it.

Haven't had a lot of time but I up'd the base spark table by 7 across the board, runs fantastic when it's warm, sputters and farts and cutsout when it's cold. I haven't had a chance to fiddle with it since loading it, hoping to get a bit of time today. Best news by far though, I used maybe 4 gallons of gas this week so a net gain of about $50 a week in my bank account. Thanks again for all the help!

cool, yeah once you get her dialed in and acting right she should be even better

most idle instability is due to vac leaks, even very small minute leaks can cause havoc

Yep can't wait.

It actually idles perfect now, its just when you accelerate when its cold that it acts up.

that would most likely be the enrichment table needed to be increased in those cold cells

One of these days I'll get back to tuning this thing, if I can stay out from under my back up vehicle for more than a week at a time.
20170521_174402_resized.jpg

Anyway, any word on your SD tuning writeup Decipha? Not to push you or anything, just looking forward to getting that thing running like it should. Debating getting a different cam, I got the last one with 114 separation to accommodate the computer I couldn't program but I think it might be my problem, either that or don't have any compression, got a rear seal leak anyway might as well drop in a cam. Pretty sure I have a dead spot in my TPS as well. Tough to build cars when you don't have any money or have a clue what you're doing, more the clueless thing.

Any recommendations on a cam?
