Harmonic balancer for blower

Well toasted the 2nd oe style balancer, so who runs what?

I Found a Powerbond Race Series SFI Approved
PB1084SS for a reasonable r
Price but will it hold up? Only want to buy it once.

Double keyway? Is it necessary?

Not looking to run spacers or anything like I see some require

I Broke a chunk off of the last one on the part that slides in the crank seal, this one the keyway is about 3/4inch wide now on the balancer side, I torqued it to spec when I threw it back together but apparently I need way more torque on it.
Hope the crank is okay gotta pull timing cover and see if there is still a keyway on the crank

The woodruff keyway on the crankshaft is wallowed out pretty good closest to the balancer for about 1/2" maybe more,
thinking I need to change the crankshaft...
if that's the case may as well get a second woodruff key machined on the new crank and a blower specific balancer.

Got the timing cover off cleaned the crank and took some better pics, does it look salvageable with a new woodruff key and balancer?

Balancer bolt had to have backed off. Is the woodruff key just for ensuring proper alignment on the crank or with a tight balancer bolt should the keyway be what's stopping the balancer from spinning on the crank?

i cant open jpgs on my mobile

the keyway is what centers the balancer and stops it from slipping on the snout

If you get a sec and could check the pics over, still don't know if it's salvagable some people say yes some say no, still undecided if it can work with this crank, new woodruff key and a new balancer

I would pull the crank sprocket, clean the shit out of that with brake parts cleaner and a steel wire brush, knock that old woodruff key out, and file it back so a new one will fit. There's still plenty of meat left on the snout, but obviously that balancer is decoration.

i just checked them out, I was say no that crank isn't gonna be up to the task, if it was n/a and not driving a blower off the snout it would be fine but with a blower it will fail just a matter of time

you can yank the crank and weld it up and machine it back, but that would prob be more work than just replacing it

Bah, still undecided which way to go ,have a powerbond sfi race balancer sittING at the parts store(single keyway standard size oil seal, CNC machined AISI 1045 forged steel hub) and a spare crank sitting in a block on the shelf.

Do I throw the spare crank in, single keyway powerbond balancer and do this as cheap as possible, (less than 200 usd total)

or have the spare crank machined for second woodruff(probably be at least a couple hundred bucks) and get an expensive blower balancer (cheapest I found was like 400 us, well over 650 canadian shipped duty and taxes)

If there is another issue with the bottom end thats not more than a couple hundred bucks to fix or some parts o have on the shelf shes just getting a dart iron eagle shortblock with my top end on it

im kind of leaning towards the cheaper fix because the expensive blower balancer will still have a 50oz balance and if i upgrade to the dart shortblock in the near future, id need another higher dollar balancer, the dart would be internal balanced and whatever balancer i get now will be a paperweight.

Do yall loctite the balancer crankshaft bolt? Blue? Red?

Decisions decisions

That's something you'll have to decide on your own. As for loctite, I do not use it on my balancer bolt because I've never had one back off. 3 ugga duggas and they've always been good to go.

Doubt ill go this route but any more info on welding the crank? Have to be tigged prob? Would a mig suffice? Have to quench it once its welded?

i would tig it, i wouldnt recommend migging it as youd prob get a bunch of trash in the weld

you can toss an insulating blanket over it to help it cool down slower if u were so inclined to, I dont think it would be too critical though
