Tune help

Unread postby Crock23 » Thu Mar 13, 2014 9:18 pm

Hey all let me just start by saying I've been reading here for a while and finally decided to join in and hopefully get my weekend car drivable. I've had this car for about 4 years now and bought it with the basic mods already done to it. Of course the drivability of the car absolutely sucks so shes been parked for most of the time. I finally got the time to mess with her and try my hand in this tuning game. Quarter horse BE EEC Analyzer and innovate wideband all hooked up and ready to roll. I currently have Deciphas A9L2 loaded with the #80 high and low slopes input along with the pro m #30 Maf curve which is whats on the car. I have done all I can think of to tweak it but it still runs like crap, idle surges badly. I can only read the write ups so many times and still dont quite grasp it all yet. I need some help dialing in my fuel. Would someone mind peeking at my set up and point me in the right direction? No matter what I do I cant seem to tame the beast. I would love to be able to drive her this summer without fear of her dying on me. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

you need to dial in idle air and and you should be good to go, your fuel looks dialed in pretty well just a touch lean at idle which is no big deal

your not logging isc duty cycle but it has to be through the roof you need to open up that throttle body, dial in idle air and be done with her

here you go give this a try, NO IDLE AIR DIAL IN NEEDED

I noticed you had a VERY OLD version of the A9L2, this is the latest not even released yet, it has what i call mechanical idle control so you adjust idle using the set screw on the throttle body

I recommend opening up the throttle body set screw 2 full turns and then backing it down slowly once she gets up to warm stabilized idle, adjust the set screw until she idles how you like when fully warmed up

once you load her in and fire it up, you can change the kamclr switch back to normal and update then save the tune

...let me know how you like the idle and dashpot with this tune

Finally got to play with the new tune and fix a few things this weekend and wanted to give update. I had to lean the MAF 15% to get it to idle without surging. Set the idle to approx 850-900 through the throttle set screw. Mechanical idle adjustment seems to work good. Few things I'm noticing:
1. Free revving tips in rich 10.5 and swings way lean 20+ before settling back to 14-15.
2. In gear when I decel and let the engine slow me down WB pegs lean 20+ and is popping.
3. Before new tune it bucked real bad. I couldnt even drive in 3rd gear at low speeds now I can. Bucking is still there but not very bad at all. I can live with it.
4. When I push in on the clutch and try to coast she gets pissed and dies. Fires right back up but has to be throttle jockied to stay running. This one I would like direction on.
I am very pleased with the drivability of it now complete night and day difference. Its slowly getting there. I posted a new log and the tune if you want to take a look at it.

Ive decided to scrap the mechanical idle for now

It sounds like you have too much accel enrichment, reduce the aem accel enrichment multiplier scalar and see if it helps

I will do that thanks. Whats the reasoning for scrapping mechanical idle?

no time to perfect it with my schedule right now

ill get back to it later on though, it truely is far superior than having to dial in idle air

Messing around with the car this evening and have a couple of questions. I know your scrapping the mechanical idle right now but thats what Im using since thats how I sort of dialed it in. It holds at around 8-900 after gently letting it down there but if I rev the engine the rpms drop to about 500 the car leans way out and dies. Starts back up surges and will slowly settle if I jockey it. The log above is from sunday and seems to be dialed in as far as the fuel and maf curve from what I can tell. My other concern is the TFS stage 2 cam. I know there is overlap with this cam but the smell of fuel is very strong even with the wideband reading 14-15. Any suggestions to reduce and or hopefully rid this issue? I know Im not the only one running this cam but I can hardly stand to run this thing very long. Ive checked and restabbed the distributor several times thinking maybe a tooth off but its not the issue. Id like to put a smaller more streetable cam in but there has to be a solution for this. This fuel smell has been here with #30 injectors and these #80 DEKAs.

if you smell fuel your distributor is set wrong, no questions about it

I will restab it again and see if it helps. Ive stabbed it a tooth advanced and retarded from the sample pic in the ignition reference and it didnt seem to help.

Hey Crock I have the mechanical idle tune as well and my car had the same issue until I put some miles on her and multiple restarts. My car did not like anything less than 1000 RPM idle either. Every now and then she will act crabby if I touch the pedal on a cold start before the idle smoothes out. Other than that the idle is solid as a rock and I'm definitely happy with it. Sorry I didn't mean to ease drop on your post but I saw where you were having similar symptoms that my car had in the beginning.I would put a few miles on her with multiple restarts and maybe it will clear up like my car did.

even though you have mechanical idle doesnt me you dont dial in dash pot decay or dash pot pre position. even with playing with those i had to put my dasmin to .21 and my dasmph to 1 to get it to come to slow enough idle that it wouldnt over shoot it

This weekend is going to be a nice weekend to do some much overdue driving. Tired of using gas in the garage just to idle and am ready to go play for sure. I am still messing around with injector timing to try to rid the smell at idle or at least knock it down more. I think its just a by product of overlap with the TFS stage 2 cam.

Dont know if this would help or not but should you have a 2 for number of HEGO sensors instead of a 1?
