Timing help

Unread postby 91foxgt » Sun Jan 14, 2018 8:40 pm

I have a stock 91 mustang gt with the A9L2 tune. I didn't have a timing light, so for the longest time i was running the tune with 14 degrees of timing when it asked for only 10. Finally my timing light came in the mail today so i set it to 10 degrees and went on a test drive. Immediately i can feel a deference. It doesn't pull as hard as it did with the 14 degrees. I want to set it back to 14 but im afraid i can damage engine if i do. Anybody know if it is ok to set it to 14 degrees?

part of tuning is dialing in timing, if it lost power with those 4 degrees out then go to the spark table and add 4 degrees back to it

Update: I added 2 degrees to the entire table to be on the safe side but the car is still weird. I've noticed it sounds completely different (good or bad, i dont know). Im going to take away the 2 degrees i added since i dont know if it can cause damage to my motor.

+/- 2° won't damage a stock motor. How is it acting weird?

Well guys i have to admit, i made the stupidest mistake i can possibly make. So last week when i was adjusting the timing to 10 degrees, i followed the steps and adjusted it with the spout connector removed then tightened everything up while the timing was set. Turns out that i forgot to plug the spout connector back!!!! so i was driving the car all week with it off. i was revving it out too, so my fingers crossed i didn't damage anything. I just jumped the connector with a paper clip for now since the spout connector is probably gone somewhere on the highway lol.

with the spout out it was just locked at what you set it at with no advance, so it was locked at 10*. i dont think it would hurt anything that low.

car seems to run fine with no issues. Like you said, it probably didn't hurt anything. Thanks.

nope it won't hurt nothing just won't make any power

A few years back I had a guy check timing at the track to verify it was at 10 dbtdc, he checked it and it was, he then closed the hood and neglected to plug the spout back in, car ran an 11.1, much much slower than the 10.5 it was running on the prior passes, amazing how much power 7 degrees can make
