Issues flashing Moates J3 chip

Unread postby Cougar281 » Wed Sep 23, 2015 12:45 pm

When I got my J3 chip, I had first attempted to flash it using Tunerpro, and for some reason, it would fail with 'ERROR: PROM I/O returned failure.' real quick. I downloaded and used the Moates Burn software, which is the same thing used to burn the chips in TunerPro (although it seems the version in TunerPro uses a much newer version of PromIO.dll than the version downloaded from Moates - 1.00.3954 with TPRT vs 1.00.3518 with F&B), and it worked - I was able to erase the chip and then program it without issue.

Well, fast forward to today and I was going to flash a bin to the chip, and now the Moats flash & burn is failing. When I try to erase the chip, I get 'ERROR: Erase Command returned failure'. If I try to program it, I get the 'ERROR: PROM I/O returned failure'. The Burn2 is recognized and I have 'J3 Ford adapter' selected. I've tried it on three different machines, all with the same results.

Any ideas why it won't erase or flash now? It would be nice if the errors could be a little more descriptive.

use the moates prom i/o within tunerpro

be sure you load the tune into the buffer first
what are you setting for the ranges to write to?

With much playing around, I got it to write.... something about the Burn2/FA/F3 chip seems to be REALLY temperamental about how it's attached...

I'm not sure I can really say... on the software side, I did nothing differently than I had done 64 times before - plug in the Burn 2, start F&B, try to erase - it magically decided to work finally. On the hardware side, I fiddled with the FA/Burn2 interface, moving it around in the ZIF socket, and moved the chip around on the FA connector a bit. No idea what actually made it work. Nothing seems to have a bad connection, all the pins on the chip seem to have good tension on the FA.

If it was something in the fiddling with the hardware, then it's REALLY sensitive about how it's all put together. If it was software, then maybe a sunspot ended allowing it to work lol.
