Battery Charger Fried Computer

Unread postby decipha » Wed Dec 04, 2013 10:59 am

I got a call from a friend of mine that was in the process of putting a holley efi setup on his car, while hooking everything up and writing the tune he had a battery charger on the car to keep the battery from dieing

as soon as he went to fire up the car it fried the computer!!!

now he has a $1,000 paperweight since the computer is "sealed and not repairable" thus he just wasted 1,000 for a simple mistake

so be warned when using the holley efi setups and a battery charger

This sort of thing always surprises me. Apparently the same thing happens to Bosch Motronic ECUs. It's like the manufacturers have never heard of someone needing a jump.

I have a question about computers getting fried. I suspect my A9L is. I know this is the Holley EFI section but there were no post in the Mega Squirt section yet. if i know the car will be sitting for awhile i unhook the bat. My battery cable will make a pretty good spark when i hook up the cables. even though everything is off. could this fri a computer? im not really sure where to look for the cause. i know the EEC has 1 wire that has power all the time. would it be good to put a 50 cent cap and poly fuse there. Im going to be upgrading to CBAZA and possibly a Mega Squirt III after that. it would hurt my feeling a little to fri a $75 CBAZA EEC but I'll be pretty p*ssed off if i fried a Mega Squirt. what Cap and fuse do you use or recommend? thanks

The ford ecus are protected against such.

I believe the megasquirts are as well. Im not familiar with the hardware, soon as i get a chance ill verify.

I did a little more searching and found that MegaSquirt doesnt have a constant power feed like KAMPWR that the factory EEC has/uses. so hooking up the battery and making a spark shouldnt be able to send anything bad to the MegaSquirt as long as the power is off at the switch. i dont know about bat charger or jump start though.

decipha can you define the parts you used for your home-made filter...it sounds like some real cheap insurance! I'd like to build one.

i think it a stander replay. my avenger ecu went bad, sent it back and they tolled me would cost me $1200 for a new one. they said it was from over charge the battery. i tolled them that i had not been charged it at all (and i had not had a charger or jump stated it) it was running for ten mins the day it then died . a call to summit racing ware i bought it from (it was 3 mo out of warranty) and holley called me back and replaced it free of charge. note they sent a hp ecm, and has been running good for the last 2 yrs on the same alt and battery.
