Dacco F60 and F63 Torque Converter

Unread postby decipha » Thu May 07, 2015 9:26 pm

So I need a new converter in the harley, the rivets are letting loose causing her to rattle with 230k miles on the converter before i got my hands on it for the trans swap Id say its held up pretty good

Looking up the 4v converters Im coming up with incorrect info

The Dacco F60 is the OEM replacement converter for the 2003 Maurauder

F63 is the OEM replacement converter for 03-04 Mach 1s and 98 mark 8

cross referencing these to an 04 crown vic shows that

F60 is for 10.5" - 10.625" extension housing
F63 is for 11.25" extension housing

Further more cross referencing that to an 04 F-150 4.2L shows F60 as the OEM replacement

and yet again cross referencing a 2003 F150 4.6L F60 is the OEM replacement
^^thats where my 4r70w came from when I swapped out the 4r100, current stall ~1800

Looking up an 04 mustang V6 shows F60HS and 11.375" ext housing, HS meaning high stall, all the others are listed as mid stall

anyone know the real scoop?

btw my original 4r100 had a converter dropped in it back in 2005 when ford replaced the OEM trans at 70k miles, it stalled at ~2200 and was a huge improvement over this hunk of junk I have now, Im hoping the mark8 converter will stall at least 2500 behind the 5.4s torque

I just found on J&H the F60 series is the larger and shittier 12" converter

F63 is the smaller and better 11.25" diameter converter

so thats what I'll be snagging to toss in she along with a flexplate

Im hoping with the additional torque of the 5.4 I can stall 2200 and flash 2600 we shall see

I picked up the F63 from transtar $100

locating an 8 bolt flexplate with the smaller converter pattern is no easy feat

fuck it, i bought a prw flex for the incorrectly sized aftermarket 10.5" torque converter bolt pattern, i plan on just drilling it out, should be in next wednesday

btw, i blew up the flex plate in the harley last night, it was raining and i decided to do some burn outs in the drive way, a loud screech and bam! she let loose

its pretty common for the 5.4s to eat flexplates and with the trans coming in and out 7 times earlier this year im not surprised

can't wait to toss the f63 in there, i'll be sure to post back with stall speed and driving results

I got her for $88 off ebay, swansons and sons

so the PRW SFI flexplate came in when I was out of the country. Yesterday I chopped back in and ripped the trans out, swapped the flexplate and converter. I did have to drill out the holes about 1/8 of an inch. I just wallowed them with a 1/2" drill bit and it fit like a glove. I had to drill towards the outside diameter. It was just barely off a cunt hair.

Today on my way to autozone to get some more merc-5 the damn cooler line busted in front autozone while i was topping it off. Second time the damn cooler line gave me shit. I'mma hopefully get a fitting and a short compression line to fix it once and for all.

My initial drive was pretty impressive, i didn't stall it since it was about 3 quarts low on fluid but it engaged much firmer than my 1800 stall converter with 230k miles lol
It felt very direct and positive, she didn't feel loose at all. Once I get changed up to my grease clothes imma go out and fix the cooler line. $100 worth of brand spankin new synthetic merc-5 pumped out all over the ground, shit sucks.

i'll post back once I fix it and stall her up.

oh yeah, imma post a pic of the stock flexplate I blew up too :) center section is completely separated

So i temp fixed the cooler line again, since Ive done the 4r70w swap back in february this is the 2nd time the upper cooler line busted right at the trans port. since I originally had a 4r100 i still have the larger 3/8" lines that I had to mate to the smaller 1/4" 4r70w lines. I just cut the hard line and slipped a 3/8" hose on it with a couple double clamps. Seems as though I get about 2 months use before she splits the hose.

Any way I got some compression fittings in 3/8" and 1/4" yesterday, I couldnt find a female reducer so i had to hose it up again, can u guess what i gotta do today? lol

Anyway I didnt want beat on the converter just yet as its still settling in, but I did give it about 1/4 throttle and she flashes 2k with nicely, before my other converter would only flash about 1300 at that same scenario :)

I tried to get on it once and it sounded horrible, imma check over the converter bolts to make sure they hadnt loosened up

I still cant stall it up gotta finsh a few things before i really beat on it

I did do some testing in the driveway, I got her to brake stall at 2500, its hard to get a real accurate brake stall speed because the 20s just let loose :) something the 1800 and 2200 stall couldnt do :)

I did some part throttle accels and she flashes about 2700

Im fairly confident she will flash 3k on a hard launch, hopefully the street tires bite

If anyone needs to order the 3/8" x 5/16" compression reducer fitting to adapt the larger 4r100 cooler lines to the smaller 4r70w cooler lines I found 2 sources

I found the stronger more expensive Parker - 6-5 HBZ-B for $9.26 /ea on mscdirect / MSC# 71783500 / Swaglok Part Number B-600-6-5 apparently its made by carpenter
that bitch is serious rated for 2300 psi

https://m.mscdirect.com/mobileweb/produ ... arts=false

and the moe cheapah fastenal alternative

Fastenal Part No. (SKU): 69393 UNSPSC : 40183103 for $25 for a pack of 5, only rated for 1200 psi

you really don't have luck with automatics! just fix the damn thing already! lol but what you have now is still loads better than the 4r100. i've never heard a good thing about them. is the converter good at least? it'd be nice to know of a good backup source.

alright final consensus

she flashes 2700 and stalls 2250, its hard to get an accurate brake stall as I'm pretty sure she's spinning well before lock up, I'm sure its a combo of the smaller 11 1/4" converter with the the 4r70w as opposed to the bigger 12" converter w/ the 4r100 but before the brakes would hold the 4r100 at 2200 rpm all day long, i can't even get to 2200 with the 4r70w without the 20s lettin' loose

tickled

just got an email from fastenal they are out of stock on the fittings and are looking for some blah blah etc...

just my luck

trans is working great though, i had to pull back some of the shift pressure on the big end as she was bangin so hard i thought she was gonna break something, nice smooth, and firm now, amazing what just a converter swap can do to the shift pressure

now i got cracked headers i gotta tackle next... maintenance sucks
