Tuning Laptop Recommendations

Unread postby decipha » Wed Jan 06, 2016 3:18 pm

Ive been out of the loop for a bit but the time is now and Im in dire need of replacing my old gateway nv50a tuning laptop. Shes been good to me for the past 5 years or so but its definitely time to replace her. Shes always had a delayed USB initialization and has the dreaded gateway usb blue screen fault from time to time. I cant complain though, I paid $400 for her brand spankin new from tiger and Ive definitely gotten my moneys worth.

Prior to this I had a mini acer aspire one netbook, it was absolutely amazing, I much prefer the smaller more compact size of the 7" screen over this huge 15" monstrosity I have now.

I had no complaints with the acer except one day it just died and wouldnt turn back on

My only request is that the new laptop have at least 2 usb ports

If anyone knows where I can score a steal please post a link

I currently have a few HP laptops that i switch between, but im not thrilled with their durability. My wife has an ASUS laptop with a i7 processor that is a real powerhouse and is really durable with a bushed aluminum case. Its surprisingly lite for a 15.6" laptop. The model she has is a Q500A. It looks like its still available on amazon and other places for around $4-500. One more thing that is making me get away from HP and a few other companies like Lenovo, is they use a whitelisted BIOS (or at least used to), so in the long term things like wifi, bluetooth, etc... arent upgradeable unless you use one that is listed in the whitelist of the bios. Unfortunetly BIOS arent updated for very long after a laptop is older than a year or so, then you are stuck with whatever is listed in the bios. In my case one of my laptops i wanted to upgrade to a dual band wifi card, i purchased a real nice dual band AC card with built in bluetooth. I got a nice boot time error saying there is unauthorized hardware installed, and it refused to let me boot beyond that point. I now have hacked bios in that laptop, but people shouldnt have to deal with that. I like ASUS because they dont whitelist anything in the bios, so they are great for the long haul, you can keep your hardware relatively relevant for quite a while.

Im not really interested in upgrades, I just need something small and compact that has good battery life mostly.

I'll check out the mini ASUS laptops, I'd like to keep it less than 10" at the absolute most, 7" would be perfect

true, the windows tablets are nice specifically the surface 3

it seem as though I've been out of the loop for a bit, it appears netbooks are no longer being made due to tablets, yeah its been a few years lol

the surface 3 appears to be most ideal for me, the price isn't to pleasing though as you said

Here you go: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NY29UIO/ref ... UTF8&psc=1

Screen size you want, processor that makes battery life great and a 32GB SSD. If you're just using this for tuning then it's going to be tough to beat this device.

No problem. I hope it works well for you.

It would be awesome if they made this software for the Android platform. There are so many more choices there.

I bought an HP Stream to do homework on and tune with. Works pretty good, just wished I'd have grabbed one with a capacitive screen so it's easier to operate while I'm driving.

I just picked up a used HP EliteBook 2540p. Its a quad core I7 at 2.2ghz per core with 4 gigs of ram. Its a nice little laptop, and i got it for under $200.

Hey man, it's no problem at all. You guys have helped me plenty and since I'm an IT guy by trade this kind of stuff is pretty easy. A lot of this technology is becoming disposable so a higher priced device that can do everything isn't all that necessary anymore. Good luck.

i hear ya man thanks, this little jewel is exactly what I was looking for, im liking it so far, I could have really used her last weekend on the plane, its much easier to whip this sucker out my pocket and start tinkering rather than hauling around an extra heavy laptop bag with a 2 foot laptop lol

If you don't already use it, something like either Google Drive or Dropbox is really what you're looking to get. You can keep your data backed up there and when you get a new device you just have to reinstall their app and it will come right back down to your device. I use both and in both cases you get a certain amount of storage for free. Google gives you 15GB but costs more than Dropbox if you want more storage. Dropbox gives you 1GB but it's cheaper than Google if you want more.

well my little asus laptop is acting up pretty bad, yesterday ws the first time i had any issues with her took me about 7 restarts and 30 minutes to get it going

today was much worse took me about 2 hours and about 40 restarts to get her to come on. The video card has gone to shit and wont power up the display. Been having video xard driver errors in my windows logs now for a couple months.

Anywho, any recommendations on another?

I still stand by my recommendation of the HP elitebook 2540p. It's built for commercial environments and is nice and compact. Comes with plenty of horsepower for its size and is dirt cheap used on ebay. The one I got I upgraded with an ssd and it does everything I could ever need it to do. There are other elitebooks for similar price points that may fit you better.

I bought a used Surface 3 for $200 and it's been flawless. It replaced a first gen Surface RT, which also had no issues. I bypassed the single USB with a cheap USB hub. The mouse I use is Bluetooth though, so I only use the hub when I plug in a full size keyboard and need access to an external drive.

+1 for HP also. I have a 12 year old HP Compaq 8510W laptop that will still works great.

Word of warning about USB drives; when they fail they just drop dead. No chance for recovery. Same is true for SSD. Make sure you have that stuff backed up elsewhere also.

Yes on the ssd failure. Everything that I feel is important I have backed up to my Google Drive for that exact reason. But i do also monitor the condition of the ssd periodically and i didnt install a elchepo ssd, i used an enterprise rated ssd from micron.

I have Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro-1370 13.3" that can be used as a tablet or laptop. Good battery life, enough power. 8 GB ram, 250 GB ssd. I like it very much, but it isn't cheap. I luckily got good deal for it. Only drawback is screen resolution for Tunerpro, I have not succeeded to adjust it to show dashboard how I would like it to be.

Mine does not do this. TunerPro RT v5.00 Windows 10 Home

Edit: Solution go to View > Dock/Undock Active Utility Tab (or Ctrl F8)

new laptop came in, looks pretty nice for being used like new i wonder how the hell they clean them cuz it looks like its never been touched before

anywho, i hadnt gone through it yet just powered it up erased the password and changed the username. Its a bit bigger than I was hoping for but will work nicely.

I'm looking for a tuning dedicated laptop and was looking for updates on this.

I know what the Tweecer RT requirements are but what are the today's requirements for tuning? I will be using a LC-1 wideband.

I was originally looking at a HP Elitebook that was refurbished but they have so many different models to choose from.

my new laptop still hasn't got any real use yet, im tryping this on my old laptop still. I found out my video card driver issues causing my screen to go blank was due to me leaving the display on for extended periods of time with the lid closed. Now I have it going to sleep everytime iI shut the lid instead of just turning the screen off and I hadn't a single issue since.
