Boot WinXP on Win8 netbook

Unread postby decipha » Tue Apr 25, 2017 1:01 am

so i have a little asus netbook that i use for tuning, it came with windows 8 and is now kaput

i formatted the hard drive and attempted to install windows xp, the bios doesnt recognize the windows xp mbr, it seems to only look for the windows 8 mbr

i can put a win8 recovery usb drive in and it reads it fine and boots no problem

i can put a win xp recovery usb drive in and it wont detect it

i would like to try to boot from a windows xp cd rom but i dont have a cd rom drive and cant locate my usb cd rom drive

I know i've been out of the pc loop for a bit but damn this is just stupid

i've tried writing the boot sector to the drive using bootsect /nt60 and /nt52 but that doesnt appear to do anything anymore

does anyone have any insight by any chance?

i tried using a program called rufus and that was absolutely useless

Have you got a bios option for legacy boot?

Does bios recognise a drive is installed?

What sort of drive is it?

Rufus worked for me to create a gpt uefi bootable thumb drive for win 7 install to a NVMEa drive.

I've used Rufus with success before; I think this was the guide I used: http://reboot.pro/topic/17327-tutorial- ... imple-way/

I've used it on a an Asus Eee PC 901 and, IIRC, the only oddity was due to the SSD setup. You may need to press ESC during the boot screen to be able to select the USB drive as the boot device.

If you need XP, have you considered XP mode, or running XP as a virtual machine?

my netbook doesnt have a bios, uefi only so it requires a gpt drive, it wont even recognize the drive if its not gpt, since im limited to gpt only by my uefi, im going to try to load win xp 64bit on it since it supports gpt, i'll post back with my findings

nope virtual machine wont work for what i need

So UEFI/GPT, no UEFI/MBR support on the laptop?

You realise 16bit apps wont run on XP 64bit?

What exactly are you trying to do?

I have upgraded to Win7 from Win10 on my recently acquired Lenovo P50.

I have Win7 as UEFI/GPT.

What is it about GM tuning that forces use of XP?

So it looks like it has an RS232 serial interface, is it an issue with usb-serial converters rather than older laptops with a native RS232 port?

To be clear my reference to XP Mode, is not XP compatibillity mode.

Here is a link to a similar setup for 8.

Another method. To my knowledge VMware is the best choice due to usb3 support.

Oh, the ones I googled had a DB connector on the interface.

I am running Win 7 and use Microsoft's Windows Virtual PC for XPMode rather than VMware. Chosen simply because that is the default method for Win7. I may switch to VMware if I need better USB3 support in future.

Opening the XP desktop requires 58MB of RAM in Win 7 as reported by task manager in Win 7. Opening XP task manager shows that XP would take up to 512MB of RAM if needed.

just read the stock tune and trans out my 2014 silverado truck and opened up my camaro tune no problem

wow, that is a bunch of crap. I think it is pretty stupid you even need to set that as an option. I guess it seems stupid to choose when to enable backwards compatibility or not. It isn't something we think about.
