93 T-bird 3.8 to 4.2

Unread postby J-man » Sat Aug 19, 2017 4:12 pm

I have it apart because of a spun rod bearing and am considering getting a crank and rods out of an F-150 4.2 Engine.

Question#1 Will the ECC compensate ok with no tuning needed?

Question#2 Im not planing to add the balance shaft because my 3.8 block doesn't have the oiling holes drilled. Do you think no balance shaft will be fine? The 3.8 didn't need it but Henry put it on the F-150.

Thoughts?

Ok, I know what your thinking for the effort wht not just drop a 302 or 4.6 into it and be done. It's my daughters car and mainly I'm just trying to get it back up and running but I can never just leave well enough alone. I read it a super easy crank swap and you end up with more displacement.

Anyone ever try it??

Thank you

I dropped a 4.2 crank in my supercoupe block with no balance shaft, I didnt have any problems

I recall the last main was different thats about it, its been years since ive assembled a v6

just the crank swap alone wont affect the ecu, I can shoot u out a chip for it though that would fix any issues you might have after the fact

Thanks Decipha I was hoping that would work. I read that the supercoupe block does have a different size on the last main but on the 4.2 and non turbo 3.8 they all match. It was a bitch pulling out that engine everything fits in there like a glove. I probably did it the hard way, I pulled gas tank, driveline, exhaust, auto trans, starter, unplugged engine harness, radiator, hoses, disconnect lines at the fuel rail, misc. yada yada, then finally pulled right out. When I first climbed under there I was impressed by the suspension and how the engine fits into the K member so tight. Seems like Henry put a lot of effort into the design of this car. I'm guessing each available engine must have had its own matching K member?

P.S. For anyone that has not looked under one of these cars, the gas tank wraps around the driveline completely covering the front half of the pumpkin and U-joint. I couldn't
figure out how to pull the drive line without pulling the gas tank first.
