Hanging Throttle Question

Unread postby biffbastion » Mon Nov 20, 2017 9:17 am

I know you will probably be the one to answer this Decipha. So I was messing around this weekend as I read about your proper way to do the base idle reset. I did this because on the logs my IPSIBR is never in the recommended 0.050 (at idle) as I think you stated on a document. Now to make sure, that wasn't supposed to be .500 instead right? It is golden so assuming it is off being at -0.400. Anyways I disconnected everything (proper temp engine), set the throttle screw, got it to a somewhat steady 750ish RPM. Shut it down and plugged everything back in. Went for a test run and now it will hang the throttle when shifting and keep cruising without any pedal. It will only go back down when coming to a stop. Now to be fair, at times my car would stall coming to a stop acting like it wasn't getting enough air flow and adding more helped this. Is this normal because the car is trying to learn the adaptives? Or not normal and need to make some changes to the tune to help resolve this? All parts are Motorcraft and all are about 3 months old. I see they sell an IAC plate now that lets you make adjustments. May go this route if it's an easier fix. Thanks!

A warm, no load idle (no a/c, radio, cooling fan, lights, etc) should be as close to 0 ipsibr as possible. The IAC plate is a bandaid for those that can't adjust dashpot decay with a tuning device. Have you reset kams?

Hey SlowBox. Yeah I reset the computer and cleared Kams for safe measure. So it sounds like I need to do more research on the Dashpot Decay to help with this? I was testing a modified t4m2 this go around to see what I would get. Ran out of time to try the custom tune I had someone do originally. Though I found the stock tune and that custom tune would hang as well. That's why I had to knock the idle screw down some to keep it from hanging, but it would drop idle down to to 500 or lower and shut off at random when coming to a stop. So I thought perhaps the base idle needed a revisit after reading the steps that Decipha recommends. Thanks Slowbox

So what the customized T4M2 tune I had in, I guess I used the purchased tune values.

The FN894 were set at
800 : 0.1001
3000 : 5.0000
7000 : 5.0000
16384 : 5.000

I am assuming the 5.0000 command is supposed to take it all away? I noticed Decipha's was different and I will test that as I should have.
The FN879 (custom tune) was set at

0.000 : 0.0039
0.300 : 0.0078
0.450 : 0.0161
0.650 : 0.0479
0.930 : 0.1001
16.00 : 0.1001

Look at FN882 and DASMIN. One of them I'd bet is too high. I'm sure Decipha will get you fixed up.

Hmmm would the FN894 (Dashpot Min Clip Low Gears) be the same as the DASMIN? I did not see one named that in the parameters, but did a search for "min dashpot" and it gave me that one.

Then the FN882 is:
0 : 0.400
0 : 0.400
0 : 0.400
800 : 0.400
1000 : 0.500
2000 : 0.500
16384 : 0.500

whoa a value of 5 in that function is invalid, put the t4m2 values back to what they were and make corrections as needed 5 is just wrong

ipsibr should be at 0 at a stablizied warm idle +/- 0.05 which is roughly a 5% idle correction. IPSIBR at 0.500 is a 500% idle correction == tuner failed to dial it in

ipsibr is in lbs/min but the correction percentage about works out when idle air is simplified as outline in the mechanical idle control write up which applies for t4m2

there is only one correct position for the throttle stop and at that position ipsibr will be near 0 at a warm stable idle so long as your tune is setup correctly

the idle air write up on the homepage will give you all the details you need to know

Thanks Decipha. Yup that's what the "Tuner" put in there. That doesn't make me feel confident since he set it up that way. So basically it sounds like at this point I would probably be better off running a stock tune and making minor changes until I know exactly what I am doing. Especially since my engine is close to stock. So could I take your Dashpot settings from the T4M2 and just copy them over to the T4M0 for now? Meaning set all values from the T4M2 for the FN879 Dashpot Decay, FN882A Dashpot Airmass, and FN894 Dashpot Min Clip Low Gears to the stock tune? I just want to get rid of any RPM hang when shifting and driving.
The EEC did finally save my codes this time around and as you said its from the X Pipe. It gave me a Lean Driver O2 code and a Rich Passenger O2 code. So I as well am modifying the stock tune to just use the one bank. Thanks!

nope you cant copy the t4m2 values over since the stock tune doesn't have idle air simplified

if you want to reduce the rpm hanging on shifts increase the dashpot decay rate, if its riding the min clip and won't reduce anymore then reduce the min clip function, that simple

yea with an x pipe you have to disable hego2 due to cross scavenging, there's more details about it under the speed shop forum

Figures it wouldn't be that simple to copy. :) haha Thanks Decipha

Thanks again for all the info and knowledge. The bad is I have limited time with my car as it's at another location. So I mostly try to get a few tunes setup and test them out when I can.

that's no way to tune, you have realtime tuning with the moates qh I suggest you use it, a quick trip around the block or two and you should have it 95% of the way there no problem

You are totally right Decipha! It's just having the time to do it and read up (and comprehend) all the great info here. I am a Systems Analyst by trade, but even for me this does take some time to grasp. :) I also promised to restore my girlfriend's dads 69 GTO, so of course that is taking up most of my free time. Somehow my projects get put on hold. LOL This is my first EFI Frankenstein "toy", so it's all a journey. :D
