Trailer became disconnected on Highway

Unread postby decipha » Sat Jun 11, 2016 5:09 am

So about 30 minutes ago pulling my work trailer with my work truck doing about 70 the trailer came unhitched from the ball :o

Ive never seen nor experienced this, as soon as i realized what had happened my instinct was to ease off the throttle slightly and let the trailer slow the truck. Ive always pictured in my mind the tongue dropping and grabbing the road and flipping over lol so i didnt want it to slack up and drop, thats a real concern with these long ass chains on this one too

Needless to say though I managed to handle it correctly enough and came to a safe stop,

It happened about 20 minutes into our 35 minute trip, found the problem though, its a 2-5/8" hitch on a 2" ball. We have several trailers and this is the only one that doesnt have a 2" hitch, go figure.

Just a heads up, always check your payload yourself, dont take anyone else word for it.

I've had that happen aswell. only 2km into the trip. bloke who hitched it, didn't drop the lock on it. can you not shorten the catch chains? I always try to have them bolted as short as possible when using a trailer, so it isn't able to hit the ground.

we always cross our chains (x) so if it does come off the chains will hopefully catch the tongue rather than dragging. never had it happen thankfully, don't think the horses would like the ride
