I have extensive VM experience, IT Director and all that. Do you just want an image backup or would you like to be able to stand the OS up on virtual hardware? Hyper-V is trash, sorry.

I have the hard drive removed from my old laptop and tossed in a usb case now, my old laptop went kaput so unless I can boot it up into a VM I can't use any of the programs that run on windows 7 since my new laptop has windows 8 and none of that software is supported

Shoot guess I was late to the party. What happened to the laptop, any vague chance of getting it to boot? It's pretty tough if not impossible to convert to vm if you cant boot it. Just noticed that says mar 2016 not 17.

I'm way late to the party, too... never even looked in this part of the forum before and just saw this... I'm in to IT as well, director of managed services & cloud ... my background is high-performance compute (3d visualization), high-availability/performance hosting, and all around nerd except for my Bronco and other mechanized toys.

So - if the old drive is readable and not bricked, sure - you can try to convert it to a virtual image and boot it up in a hypervisor (xen, esx, hyper-v - free versions available for all of those common ones).

More curious, which apps will run on Windows 7 and not Windows 8? ... probably could run in compatibility mode, or disable UAC and some other "security" features to get it running. I run Windows 10 and have very few problems running any of my old favorite programs/games.

Did you ever get this going I bet you could stand up a VM on Win xp or 7 Install the jet software, then move the files over and be good to go.
