Car Trailer Tires

Unread postby decipha » Thu Mar 31, 2016 7:28 pm

Well since my endeavor earlier this month in high point, north carolina i'm in the market for two spares for my car trailer. I have the unique 5x5 bolt pattern on my trailer so choices are kinda limited.

I did find this

https://www.etrailer.com/Tires-and-Whee ... 65SMD.html

with an M speed rating (81 mph) this is right up my alley

before i click the go button I was hoping to get some feedback from some of the more knowledgeable lads here

if anyone has any info or a cheaper link please enlighten me

The rest of your tires are also radial?

I prefer bias ply tires on my trailer. They tow better and they don't come apart making tight turns.

Im back looking for trailer tires once more

i bought two of the tires in the OP link and theyve been great. My other tires are on the fritz and I dont expect much more life out of one of them with over 20k miles on it and several hours of 80-120mph drags on it.

Looking for at least 3 possibly 4 new tires. To keep as spares. Anyone know of a good site?

Size ST205/75 15

looks like walmart online has the best price 43.87 shipped

I do a good bit of towing boats and campers around my state. While I am not running 80-90 I do have my loved ones in the truck with me. I have observed many bias tires over the years that have significant hops and wobbles in them. Simply jack your trailer up and spin the tires and see for yourself. For this reason a good tire shop will tell you NEVER mix and match radial with bias as the bias tire will cause the radial to wear unevenly. I only run radials on my trailers these days because without being balanced (which most trailer tires are not) they are much closer to true and tow a lot smoother then even brand new bias tires. I had a budget boat restoration several years ago now that I put for 4 new bias tires on new wheels and wheel bearings. That trailer was only smooth between 35-40mph and 67-71mph any other speeds and you would think something was wrong if you weren't accustom to it. Most of my towing is 2-5 hours at 70mph, I always insure I have a spare, but when I head to the Golf coast or Pacific coast which is 12-16 hours I take 2 spares. The main things I watch carefully is the inflation, wear patterns, and MFG dates I never let trailer tires get older then 5-7 years from MFG date. I inflate below their max pressure but within about 10% of that number. Also when buying new tires I always always look for the highest load rating possible in that size (generally this translates to more plys). Discount tire, E-trailer, and occasionally ebay (only if I can verify date codes before buying) are the only 3 places I have ever bought a trailer tire. I look for date codes less then a year old when buying these tires, this seems to be a reasonable target to hit since trailer tires don't normally fly off the shelves.

I don't do that much towing but I haven't any issues. Good things to keep an eye out for though.
