T56 magnum wide(2.97) vs close ratio(2.66)?

Unread postby Squishy » Mon Dec 25, 2017 1:20 pm

Anyone spent time behind both ratios and have any inpressions to post about?

Leaning towards the close(2.66 1st) ratio because of the useable 6th gear and im sure the vortech will favor closer ratios but how much will the 2.66 1st hurt compared to the 2.97?

Got a set of 26" hoosier qtp's for the track this year

I will drop my rear end ratio to a 3.31 or 3.55 at the same time too i dont want to be shifting to 5th on the drag strip.

im daily driving a 2006 saleen extreme right now which comes with the GTO spec t56. Between it, my ss camaro and the numerous 03/04 cobras ive driven they all feel exactly the same to me. Ideally a close ratio would be more ideal but I wouldnt expect it to make much of a difference racing wise.

Ended up ordering the 2.66 close ratio t56 magnum, mcleod RXT clutch and quicktime bellhousing, she pulls hard higher rpms im hoping whatever i lose 60ft with the tall 1st ill gain on the top end by keeping the rpms higher between the shifts

youll never make up down the track what you loose down low just doesnt work that way, the quicker you can get the car going the better it will do overall

most races are won in the first 300 ft

Yeah i kinda figured that, im hoping 1st wont be too bad when i switch to 3.55s or 3.31 (depending on trap speed when i finally get an acceptable run)
being an all round car though not just a drag car i think the close ratio should be good for what i use it for (i hope, expensive purchase having never drove either t56) and i dont think with my powerband the .50 6th of the wide ratio would get used much. Its still not shipped so i could still change to the 2.97 wide ratio but im pretty sure ill enjoy the close ratio while driving windy canyon roads.

Ill never be a competitive drag racer, i just want to build a fast fun all around car,

Ever ran slicks with the 2.66 1st? Ive got a set of 26" hoosier qtp for the track ill try out this year just hpoing it doesnt bog and fall on its face with the 2.66 1st.

no worries youll be happy with the trans itll be fine for what your doing

bogging is a non issue in a stick car, if it bogs you either arent leaving hard enough (dumping at too low of an rpm) or your not slipping the clutch enough

its not uncommon for guys with sticks in all stock classes to side step the clutch at 6k
