Tire size, recommendations, launching

Unread postby Fasterthangas » Sat Nov 28, 2015 4:27 pm

I currently run Nitto 555 tires. Rears are 315/35 ZR 17 They actually measure about 25.5" tall.

If I were to hit the track; I don't think I can get a decent launch with these tires and I suspect more sidewall is recommended.
I'm not much of a track guy so I hate to fork out a wad of cash for a one or two day thing.

I'm not sure how to launch if I used the existing tires or bought new ones.

My converter is a 2800 stall. Gears are 4.10's.
Suspension wise; I'm crippled also. Rear arms are BBK units and springs are Eibach Pro's with progressive rate. Front springs appear to be stock but the front is lowered.
I'd like to get some sort of consistency to optimize my tune.

If I bought some sort of drag radials; do they grip in the corners for sporty driving out of town? Not much rain to worry about here.

315*0.35*2*.03937=8.68 + 17 = 25.68" diameter

it may be best to foot brake her at 1200 or so and see how she hooks

So pretty much baby it off the line. I assume that I want to lower the pressure in the rears?

Its street tires no need in trying to go to far with it, no need for a burn out, maybe drop em to 28 or so

you dont want to baby it you want to find the sweet spot where it hooks the best, ideally you want a slight spin and not a dead hook that bogs it down

Gotcha. That's very much like we did in sand drags.

yep same principle for all racing really, you want to find the optimal spot where you can get the most traction/power ratio

Those Nitto 555's will never hook. I tried them all the way down to 18psi and still blew them off. Way too hard of a tire. However they will last forever tho

If your dead set on a decent hooking street tire after I could not get the 555's to bite I swapped over to the NT05 and it actually hooked pretty good for a street tire

Ive had excellent experiences with the nitto 555s, I could pull a 1.7 60' in the rain

I had a set on my 98 camaro ss 6spd and I loved them

You'd think with a 315 Nitto 555 in the rear that I'd hook up. It ain't happening. I suspect that the car doesn't have good weight transfer to the rear. The rear arms are BBK's with poly bushings. From what I've read; they need to go. Stiffer lowering springs hurt weight transfer also.

Never found a drag radial that would hook anywhere near as well as Mickey Thompson. They don't last as long as Ntito or BFGs either.
