Went to the track was disapointed. Something maybe wrong?

Unread postby Fiveliterchevyeater » Wed Jul 01, 2015 9:11 pm

So not sure if this is the correct place for this thread but here it goes. I have track heat heads and intake with an f-cam 3.73 gears and all supporting mods no power steering or ac and electric water pump should be around 3000 lbs. Had slicks on the car so I know I wasn't spinning I realize I'm not a pro driver but can hold my own and could only manage around a 13.5 1.95 60ft at about 102mph? My wideband which I believe is accurate was 12.5 all day and 36 degrees of timing on al92 tune. Plugs looked good so I was expecting a mid to low 12 for the day weather was good not sure what could cause the car to be so slow with good a/f and 36 degrees of timing what else is there at wot? Even if I was a terrible driver mph should be higher. Anyone have any ideas or are my expectations unreal?

sounds a little on the low side

thats a horrible 60' , if you shave 3 tenths off the 60' youll pick up 2 tenths on the big end, that alone would have put you in the 12s

have u checked the balancer to make sure it hasnt slipped and you correctly have base timing at 10 *btdc with the spout removed

Yeah that 60 foot is off a 2 step at 3500 was about a 2.1 without it bogged really bad. But no I have not checked the balancer it crossed my mind with lots of other things it is a stock piece but I don't think it is likely car idles well with spout out set to 10 btdc and matches what I'm logging with spout in. Started off the day running 32 degrees bumped up to 36 by the last run gained 3 tenths and 3 mph. Also thinking a compression test is in my future. I know it doesn't have a huge impact but what kinda gap would you think I should be running with a msd coil and digital 6 box stock bottom end with 9:1 compression currently running .050

Did you figure out the sudden surge of power from a post a while back? That was weird.

I would prob put her at 0.050"

If that was your first trip to the track with her its really not bad, keep at it and youll drop the ETs

you should consider coming off the 2 step much higher, 6k isnt unreasonable

No I never did figure out that surge issue happened to me twice in two consecutive days but it has not come back and have only played with timing a little yesterday at the track. Although it is still in my mind as I feel like it pulled harder then it ever has(How I expected it to run) when that happened and was only 3/4 throttle at around 4k. So I think something is up still just not sure what half the reason I went to the track was to verify my suspicion of the car feeling under powered for my mods. First trip to the track with this setup not a stranger to it like I said I'm not claiming to be a pro but mph should be higher even if I'm a bad driver. I went 12.50 at 110 mph with a 100 shot on a bone stock 5.0 I built this to run like that without the bottle. Was keeping the launch rpm lower because I was on slicks and stock axles but 6k seems high to me aren't you supposed to launch around peak torque?

you want to launch her where she knocks down the best 60 its hard to say where thats at since a bunch of factors come into play, suspension, tire pressure, track prep, etc.. all that affects it

try launching at 4 then 5 then 6, see where shes happiest

Yeah that makes sense just checked the balancer does not appear to have spun watched for tdc with a flashlight could see the piston coming up and always was very close to 0 when it stopped coming up. Compression test is next what kinda psi should I see with 9:1? Been awhile since I have done one do you just test one at a time with all the other plugs in and try and turn it over about 3 time with the starter sound good?

yep do 1 at a time, you should be up near 175 psi or so

So I think I got it figured out found a wire on the distributor cap that was not fully seated and one that may have been arcing to the header through a hole in the boot. I think this is what was causing the surge issue as well it was creating a second gap in the ignition system that it could not jump at high loads in the engine most of the time. Ordered a new set of wires to replace the one with the hole electrical taped it for a quick drive seemed to be running better did not make any hard pulls though. Compression test was fair all cylinders were about 160-165 with engine about 100 f. The tool instructions said to pull all the plugs out rather than leaving them in did it both ways didn't make a noticeable difference just fyi. Then again it also said to have the engine hot but didn't feel like burning my hands!

true, i always do 1 at a time cuz its easier but it doesnt make any difference

i should have told you to make sure you pulled the ecu fuse so the pump wouldnt power up

I have everything run off toggle switches in the center console :D 2 speed fan, fuel pump, water pump, line loc, and starter which is a button. But yeah thought about that and I didn't want the coil stressing without the wires connected either. Even still was too lazy to lean in the car and just jumped the solenoid on the fender haha. Never was able to get my fuel pump to work properly with the ecu (doesn't turn on and when I jump the relay the power wires get hot) so I installed toggle switches but that's for another day.
