4R70 to 4R100 Swap?

Unread postby BattleBoar » Fri May 08, 2020 5:13 pm

Hello! So this is my first post so be gentle! ;) I have a 2001 F-150 that shudders around 45-50mph and also is shifting like a valve is slow to respond. It's got 160K miles so I know it's in need of a tranny. My question is should I put a 4R100 in place of the 4R70? I've read that there are some tuning issues and I need to wire up the TSS and CSS. If I have a shop do it is even worthwhile, or should I just rebuild the 4R70?

sounds like your converter is bad

no i wouldnt downgrade to a 4r100. The 4r70w is a far superior trans.

tss and css require a new ecu as well.

stick with the 4r70w

Thanks for the guidance! I’m also running 35’s with the standard 3.73 rear gears. When I get the tranny/torque converter change I was going to upgrade to 4.56 for the front and rear diffs. I figure those gears will get me close to stock, but I did see there’s 5.13 for the 9 and 8 inch rear and front diffs. I’m inclined to stick with the 4.56, what do you think?

there's only a 300 rpm difference between the two at 80mph roughly 2400 vs 2700. If you do any kind of highway travel with the truck then the numerical lower gears would make more sense. If its just a city cruiser and play truck then gear it up.

Me personally I'd recommend sticking with the 3.73s (roughly 2000 rpm at 80mph) and try out a 4k stall converter. If it doesn't give you the grunt you want then you can always swap the gears later.
