Finally seeking professional help - 1994 GT

Unread postby Wolf359 » Tue Sep 17, 2019 1:37 pm

Long story short, I have been messing with my 94 GT for a few years and using BE/EA I was able to tune in some pretty good performance, mpg and highway drive ability but that success was never present at low speeds or idle. After switching to Tunerpro and having another learning curve, I came here to seek help and get things done right.

Current issues:
- My previous efforts did not port over well to Tunerpro, starting from early stages again
- My current idle mixture seems very rich and idled much better in OL
- Was not able to complete the step 1/2 logs well due to surging (stinky rich) idle

Current goals:
- Get the car to idle cleanly without surges
- Get the engine to never stall without driver error
- Get low speed driveability to a good point
- Eliminate bucking
- Have RPM drop very quickly between shifts without stalling

Current plan:
- Load the latest iteration of my Decipha tune (attached)
- Redo step 1/2 logs while doing whatever needs to be done to keep engine running

Comments:
- I had the TB set screw placed per some previous step/step instructions which said to start with it located so that it barely idles with spout and IAC unplugged
- Log idle using BE and make final tweaks to have the screw located so that the IAC Duty Cycle is in some specific happy range
- I think I followed those instructions well and the car idled MINT
- I set high idle range MAF transfer per many BE logs using MAF adjustment tool and many low rpm closed loop driving sessions
- I set nominal idle range MAF transfer per what the car idled well at in OL, my goal was always to force OL at idle and I could never figure that out. My OL MAF transfer resulted in a very happy, clean and smell free idle that read 16-18 AFR on my wideband (LT headers, X-pipe, N41 cam with some overlap etc)
- Is my MAF transfer no longer compatible with the current plan to idle in CL with 1 HEGO?

Thanks to Decipha for his previous assistance, wealth of knowledge and overall helpfulness.

Update:

While running through another attempted log I had a pretty bad stumble which turned out to be my distributor taking a crap. I have an MSD unit with FORD OEM electronics inside and unfortunately replacing the guts was not the end of the problems with this part. Some mounting point for the pickup just fell apart and pickup is now loose, damaged and rubbing the wheel. I found out Ford no longer makes a distributor for this car... What distributors are you guys buying these days? I heard Spectra is the best option out there unless you can get yours hands on someones used OEM unit. Thoughts anyone?

Dasilva Racing (local to me Mustang performance tuning specialist) uses the Spectra FD22 distributors exclusively these days with no reported issues for years.

Spectra dizzy ordered. Should arrive Monday/Tuesday.

Funny enough, Rock Auto is the lowest cost supplier for me here. I buy almost everything there.

Hey guys,

Got the new distributor in a base timing set to 10deg BTC. Ran a bit better for sure. I was not able to get it to idle CL HOT for 75s without throttle input so I attached the best I got. By the time I was ready to log the car was already warm so no 2A log possible tonight. What should I do next?

looks like she needs to be leaned out at least 20 percent at 175 maf cnts and below

you shouldnt have any problems dialed her in. LMK if you want to do the online tuning route.

850 -3
375 -18
325 -13
300 -13
275 -15

your maf is fluctuating quite a bit as well as your tps

It looks like you have something mechanical going on too causing the iac not to work correctly.

Make the corrections, toss a screw on there and verify the iac and tps and you should be good to go

Thanks for the response. Few questions:

What does this mean? Is that an adjustment to the MAF your suggesting?:
850 (IMAF count?) -3 (minus 3?)
375 -18
325 -13
300 -13
275 -15

TPS was moving around because I had to keep my foot in it for it to stay running I think, I will double check and do a few sweeps with engine off to make sure its reading right.

What are you suggesting I adjust with the TB screw? Increase butterfly opening at CT?

maf adjustments thats how you dial in the maf

-3 would be remove 3% so multiply the flow at 850 by 0.97 to reduce it 3%

at 375 maf counts, multiply the flow by .82 to remove 18%

you should have come up with similar errors

what were you getting?
