4r100 to 4r70w swap - 2001 Harley F-150

Original Post viewtopic.php?f=24&t=978

well I swapped in the 4r70w

swap was stupid easy, by far the easiest trans swap i've ever done in my life, i simply unplugged the 4r100 trans harness and plugged in the 4r70w trans harness, ripped out the 4r100 and tossed the 4r70w in, flipped the 4r70w trans mount bracket backwards and bolted up my original 4r100 cross member, i cut the bigger 4r100 cooler lines and hosed them into the 4r70w cooler ends, last i made a few tune changes, fired her up put a couple gallons of fluid in her and drove away, start to finish only took 6 hours all said and done I guess pulling the transmission 7 times in the past couple months really makes the process so much easier

Truck has been running flawless, I will be locating a 4r70w cross member for the trans though so it can be mounted correctly, my make shift mount has no give to it at all, the guy in mississippi has the cross and he won't be using it, i'll probably go snatch it from him if i can't find another local

Merc 3? Pretty sure they want merc 5. Unless your experience says other. Stupid fluid cost a lot when I did the swap. Now it's more normal.

yep its supposed to be merc5 i tossed merc3 in it cuz i had an abundance of it laying around, i tossed it in there just to make sure she was legit before i drop the coin on the synthetic merc 5 since i didn't know the history of the trans, its not gonna hurt it, imma put a few more miles on it and toss some synthetic merc5 in it, even at my wholesale price its still ex$pen$ive so I wanted to make sure all was well

no worries but i appreciate the concern lol

it mostly just messes with the lockup when you have the wrong fluid. so did the lengths end up being the same? driveshaft worked for both?

no the 4r70w is 7 and 1/4 inches shorter so it requires a 7 1/4" longer driveshaft

i found one on craigslist, that was the hold up on the swap

all works well though

I put exactly 107 miles on the trans since i swapped it in with absolutely no issues

i yunk the pan and replaced the filter, the magnet looked really clean for having almost 200k miles on it
cleaned her up and pulled the upper return line from the trans, crunk her and let she bleed out 3 gallons of funk while i pumped the new stuff in she

shes got fresh Merc LV synthetic in her now

I know i know, you shouldnt use merc LV in lieu of merc V

But my ford engineer trans guru recommended it and said it will be fine, I trust the guy, in an case I suppose imma be the guinea... we shall see

well its been 7 months and just over 10k miles, I've taken the truck on many 3+ hours drives and not a single issue, the trans and converter have been flawless, **knock on wood** all has been excellent

minus a header bolt that sheared off, got an exhaust leak/tick that I gotta get the courage up to fix, me figures, if imma yank the header I might as well flip it forward right?

as much as i'd like to ol' girl is tired at over 200k on the clock, maybe year after next when I rebuild her and forge her out lol

seen my old truck again at a car show and then once more cruising down the street, the owner is still driving her around and not a single issue with her trans or otherwise :)

now if only i could keep my engine in my new harley truck for that long i'd be doing good
