E-85 Blow ups

Unread postby red5.0fogger » Mon Jan 18, 2016 1:08 pm

So I was wondering.. If someone gets greedy with E85 and tries too much timing or leaning it out too much what is their reward? burned pistons? Head gaskets? Does e85 detonate at all? If it does ping does it sound the same? I've heard bits here and there that it will still break stuff.

E85 blow ups are usually from over-stressing components so crankshafts snap, pistons break, etc... its no different really than what you would expect with race gas

that rattling detonation pinging noise you hear is the actual piston ring fluttering, an engine detonates when peak cylinder pressure is reached before the optimal fulcrum angle is met so the engine fights itself, something has to give and the weakest link is the piston ring, that noise you hear is the charge making its way past the rings

I have tuned quite a few E85 setups, a lot with high hp, and not one has burned a piston or blown a head gasket that I know of. My 600 rwhp procharged 347 was a stock 302 roller block, lasted for 2 years, driving it hard and beating the snot out of it, but not drag racing it. It didn't even miss a beat. That engine is now been through several hands and rests in an n/a setup stang. It really is a magical fuel, lol.

Yes, but doesn't that apply to Race fuel or 93 oct as well? I took his question as asking if anyone has had a detonation related failure. I may have misspoke if that was not his intention. Any component will fail if it has had enough stress put on it. I look more towards E85 as being a longevity insurance policy as most of the failures I get through my door are from detonation.

In my experience, the power falls off. if it's to lean, it doesnt make power, if it's to rich, it doesn't make power. when you have it where it wants to be....it usually wants timing, and lots of it.
