Re: 351w 36-1 alignment

I’m going to get it pressed on perfectly to avoid having a custom adjustable bracket, once and done.

Re: 351w 36-1 alignment

Yes, but my 36-1 wheel is on the backside of the balancer, and does not require a custom mount for the sensor.

Re: 351w 36-1 alignment

I picked up an 1981 28oz balancer that had a 4-point ring, same as the California 1996 351w 28oz, very rare and hard to find part. The diameter of the 4-point ring is exactly like the explorer 36-1 wheel.
I used a 96-01 stock balancer, stuck it in the freezer overnight, and popped of the trigger wheel with a couple of pry bars.

The big difference is the truck serpentine pulley has four holes to bolt to the four holes on balancer. All or most 28oz balancers only have 3.

I’ve been searching for this set up for two years.

I’ll post pictures this weekend as I get it all assembled.

Re: 351w 36-1 alignment

Nope, this is a 1994 351w, all truck front dress, reverse rotation water pump.
The only thing from the explorer is the 36-1 wheel.
All other parts, sensor, pigtails, etc. brand new.
The timing cover is a Dorman 635100.

Correct, I have a brand new one.
Using a 28oz balancer that had the 4 point star(misfire ring), and 36-1 wheel from an explorer 50oz balancer.

I’ve pressed off both rings, ready to press on 36-1 wheel onto 28oz balancer, just needs to be perfectly aligned as there will be no adjustment after wards.

Re: 351w 36-1 alignment

So, with the VR sensor mounted, fixed, crank at TDC, the wheel need to be mounted on balancer at where the VR is directly over the whole tooth, 5 teeth before the missing tooth? Is that correct.

Of course timing pointer would also be at 0 degrees on balancer.

First time doing this setup, hope my question makes sense.

No, it’s fixed, see pic, ignore red arrow:

351w 36-1 alignment

I have the 28oz balancer that requires the explorer wheel to be pressed on.
I am using an aftermarket timing cover that has the VR sensor fixed mount.
Question is, if I press on the wheel and am out by one degree, will that mater, does it have to be perfect, and can it be adjusted after in the tune?
